Corfe Castle 2-0 Gillingham Town
Corfe hosted Gillingham in their opening game of 2020 looking for revenge after the season’s first meeting between the two sides.
A slow start from Corfe saw Gillingham come close on numerous occasions and if it was not for the heroics of Bradley Smith in the Corfe goal then the home side would of most definitely conceded. As the game began to settle slightly Smith was called into action again producing a fine save to his bottom right from a header at the back post.
As both teams battled on towards the end of the first half Corfe were managing to find more space in the game and Jack Hector picked the ball up, slotted it through to Courtney Johnstone who had no trouble finding the back of the net, gliding into the box and pushing it past the Gillingham ‘keeper into the bottom right.
The second half had chances at both ends, some wasted and others where both keepers were called upon. As Gillingham searched for an equaliser the Corfe Castle defence remained solid.
Substitute Ocean Smith was brought into the action second half and with 20 minutes to go found himself dancing past and in-between the back line of Gillingham. As he got closer to the goal the ball then found its way to Ryan Cattano who set himself on his weaker foot before firing it past the keeper from outside the box into the bottom left.
A good strong team performance and a great start to the New Year for Corfe Castle.
